25 Crying Pitifully

Marcel looked at his half-eaten food and decided that he was full before he stood up from the table and Liam wrapped his small arms around Marcel's neck and his legs around his torso and buried his face in his neck. He didn't want the other kids to see him look so vulnerable.

Marcel didn't say anything but he didn't forget to take the cake he had brought with him. Sarah saw the two walk out of the dining hall and looked at them worriedly.

"He must be sad that his brother is leaving in two days," one of the volunteers said when they noticed Sara look at the two boys. Sarah pursed her lips with worry, but her attention was brought back to serving food for the orphans.

Marcel took Liam to their room and set the cake on the table before he settled himself on his bed. His neck was already soaked with tears and he could feel the small body shake whenever Liam tried to breathe as his breath only came in short gasps.

Marcel just pat his back and stroked his head as he slowly started calming down. Liam had never met his parents since he was an infant when he was abandoned, so the closest thing he had to a parent was actually Marcel, they even had the same last name.

To Liam, Marcel was a father, a brother and his best friend. The thought of not being able to see him every day was too devastating for him.

"Tell me what's wrong," Marcel said when Liam had managed to calm down a bit, but after being asked about what was wrong, Liam started crying again. Marcel could only patiently comfort him.

"Do you have to leave?" Liam asked between sniffs as he pulled himself away from Marcel's chest to look at him.

Marcel looked at Liam's large watery eyes that were now slightly puffy and red and he felt his heartbreak for him. He was Lulu up until a few days ago. If Liam cried like this because he was leaving, he did not want to imagine what he went through when the actual Marcel died before.

"Baby I have to go. I wish I could take you with me but I can't for now, but I'm working on it. I will definitely come to take you" Marcel said in comfort and Liam looked at him hopefully.

"So can you not cry so hard? It's breaking my heart" Marcel said and hugged Liam. He was hiding his own eyes that had started to water. Since he arrived, Liam was the one who cared for him quietly. Even though he did not make much time for him in the past few days, which he was regretful about.

"Will you wait for me to come and take you?" Marcel asked Liam and he felt him nod slowly through their hug.

"Once I've settled down, I'll come to take you on the weekends until we have all custody issues sorted okay?" Marcel said after he pulled back so he could look at the child's face. He looked much better now, especially since Marcel said he would be coming to see him every week.

He was comforted by the fact that Marcel was not disappearing completely from his life. That was what he was most worried about. He was happy as long as he could see Marcel again.

"How could you cry so pitifully?" Marcel asked and wiped the tears on Liam's face. Liam blushed in embarra.s.sment when Marcel teased him. He also didn't want to cry alright?

"Go and get the white box I brought. Be careful with it, if you shake it you could break what's inside" Marcel warned when he saw Liam run towards the box. Liam carefully carried the box and brought it over to Marcel

Marcel couldn't resist smiling at Liam who was looking at him hopefully with his big watery eyes. Marcel took the box and held it and patted the bed to indicate that Liam should also get on it.

Once Liam was settled next to him, Marcel ruffled his hair before handing him the box. Liam looked at him in question before he slowly and carefully opened the box since he was afraid of breaking what was inside. When Liam saw that it was cake he smiled brightly and Marcel was able to capture that moment with his phone's camera.

Liam blinked in confusion before he realised that Marcel had actually gotten himself a phone.

"You didn't have a cake for your birthday this year. I'm sorry I couldn't get you any cake" Marcel said with a smile and Liam smiled back.

He was just happy to spend time with his brother, he didn't care if he brought him cake or cookies, it wouldn't matter to him.

"I didn't bring candles, fire hazard, just make a wish and we can eat it mmh?" Marcel suggested and took a fork out of his pocket.

He had taken two forks instead of one since the staff would notice if he didn't return a fork after eating.

Liam closed his eyes and made a wish and stabbed the fork into the cake and lifted the cake to feed Liam. Marcel did not know that it would take a while before he got another taste of the cake as Liam was eating the cake like a bear who found honey.

"Let's take a picture together" Marcel suggested and Liam moved closer to him and Marcel took the selfie before Liam realised that he still had cake at the corners of his mouth and had managed to get some icing on his cheeks too.

When Liam finally noticed, he gave Marcel a dirty look and wiped his cheeks with tissues and insisted that they take a proper picture.

After that Marcel cleaned up as Liam went to shower before he too went to take a shower. When he came back, he saw that Liam was waiting for him in his bed. Marcel slipped into the blankets and Liam moved closer to him.

"Don't worry. I have no work tomorrow so I'll drop you off at school and pick you up later before we go out to spend some time together" Marcel promised and kissed the child's forehead before they fell asleep.
