Within the Imperial Palace, in a luxurious and resplendent hall.
A woman sat at the head of the hall, her head decorated with a headdress spun from gold silks¹ and fas.h.i.+oned with a royal phoenix coronet², and clothed in gold and silver silks embroidered with designs of the luan bird³. Although the corners of her dignified eyes were faintly beginning to exhibit crows feet, not even that could even slightly conceal her domineering beauty.
Currently, those two dignified eyes were staring vexedly at a golden-robed young woman.
“Sixth Princess, you really have a lot of courage, to hurt even the likes of your own blood older sister. Could it be that this time is Yu-er, and the next time it will be Us⁴?” Getting straight to the point, every word was an attack towards Mo Qingli, even going so far as to implicate Mo Qingli as somebody eyeing the throne.
Mo Qingli gave a faint smile. By calling Mo Qingli as the “Sixth Princess”, and Mo Qingyu as “Yu-er”, hehe… the side the Empress was on was obvious.
Seeing that Mo Qingli did not answer, the Empress became even more enraged, ferociously striking her palm against the table in front of her, the teapot and cups on the table ringing loudly at the force. “Since you aren’t saying anything, are you implying that We are wronging you?”
Mo Qingyu’s expression was filled a jeering derision towards Mo Qingli. Hmph, you are just a b.a.s.t.a.r.d born from some low and petty servant, giving you a princess’s status is showing you too much respect! Since you dare to hurt me, and even go as far as to try and steal a man from me, let’s see how you die.
Mo Qingyu walked up, fawningly stroking the Empress’s lower back, putting on an act of concern as she said, “Mother Empress, don’t hurt yourself from worrying. Come, drink some tea and cool your temper.”
The Empress received a teacup from Mo Qingyu’s hands, lightly pursing her lips to drink it. Just as she looked up, ready to say something, she caught sight of the cotton bandaging over Mo Qingyu’s eye; at seeing a pool of blood staining the cotton, she couldn’t help but force a mouthful of bile down her throat, hurriedly turning her eyesight away.
“This daughter, has not!” Mo Qingli indifferently said.
The Empress followed the sound of the voice back to the gold-robed Mo Qingli. Her eyes trailed up from the golden robe that emphasized her delicate curves, to the long stretch of tender white skin on her neck, to her face, on which there was an uncommonly indifferent expression.
The Empress couldn’t help but be slightly astonished. From what she knew, Mo Qingli’s father had only been a palace servant, his status extremely low, which meant that growing up Mo Qingli had received none of the Empress’s affections. This had led to even the palace maids having enough courage to disregard and bully her. If it hadn’t been for that attempted a.s.sa.s.sination on the Empress, in which Mo Qingli’s father had sacrificed his life to save the Empress’s life, the Empress would have no reason to acknowledge her. Mo Qingli had thus always given the Empress a weak and good-for-nothing impression, a cowardly shadow of a person.
But now, she was calmly standing in front of her, giving the impression of someone with a lot of hidden strength!
This daughter of hers, how come she didn’t seem quite the same?
“You have not what? Are you saying that you regret not killing me as well?”
A sharp and ear-piercing voice interrupted the middle of the Empress’s contemplation. The Empress furrowed her eyebrows, giving a quick glance at the Mo Qingyu beside her. However, she did not speak, instead turning to Mo Qingli and seeing how she would react.
“This daughter has not conspired to harm Eldest Sister!” The calm and unhurried voice came from Mo Qingli’s lips. “This daughter did not know that Eldest Sister’s eyes had been hurt; it wasn’t until Mother Empress sent the Imperial Edict, did this daughter know that one of Eldest Sister’s eyes had been blinded…” Mo Qingli paused for a moment, her expression filled with righteousness as she continued. “This a.s.sa.s.sin’s courage is really to great, Mother Empress must immediately find and capture the a.s.sa.s.sin that hurt Elder Sister, and get revenge on behalf of Eldest Sister!”
Mo Qingyu stared foolishly with her one eye towards the nonsense-spewing Mo Qingli. “You, you lie!” In the end she could only manage to spew three words from her mouth in response.
The Empress narrowed both her eyes, carefully scrutinizing Mo Qingli. Mo Qingli’s face was devoid of any kind of expression, making it impossible for anyone to a.n.a.lyze her motives. Mo Qingyu’s temper she was well aware of; this child was certainly hot-headed, arrogant, but she was not the kind to tell lies. Furthermore, even if she were to have told a lie, then she would definitely not wear this kind of expression on her face.
Which meant, it was Mo Qingli that was lying!
The Empress’s face gradually became more and more angry. This girl’s courage was really too big, to try and lie to the Empress, does she take Us to be a three year old babe?
“Mo Qingli, We will ask you again one more time. Were you the one that harmed Yu-er’s eyes!”
Mo Qingli raised her eyes to match where the Empress was sitting, her ink-black eyes showing no sign of disturbance. Opening her thin lips, she slowly said, “No.”
“You dare, you should know that the punishment for lying to a Empress is beheading!” The Empress’s words were filled with a domineering tone.
Mo Qingli kneeled onto the ground, although her face was still as calm as ever, clearly not affected by the Empress’s words. “This daughter has not lied. This daughter wants to ask Eldest Sister, is there any proof that it was I that stabbed Eldest Sister?”
Mo Qingyu immediately stared blankly. When Mo Qingyu had appeared, all of the bodyguards and servants she had brought with her had immediately fainted. At the time it had just been herself, Mo Qingli, as well as Mo Qingli’s bodyguard, as well as that man from the brothel.
Those guards could not be counted on. That man… not possible, absolutely not possible, if Mother Empress were to know that I went to those kinds of places, than I will have no hope for the position of Crown Princess!
“Yu-er, do you have any evidence?”
Mo Qingyu trepidatiously kneeled onto the floor. “Mother Empress, at the time, it was just this daughter, her, and that bodyguard of hers.”
The Empress furrowed her forehead. At seeing Mo Qingyu’s panicked expression, she knew that she was concealing something, and that she was not entirely innocent in this situation either. Loudly, she shouted: “Messenger!”
