Extraordinary Memory (2)
"Haha, it wouldn't be eternal life and youth but cultivating the Dao can at least strengthen the body and prolong life." Priest YuQing says with a smile.
"I also want to cultivate that."
"Naturally. This priest will teach you the five arts of the spiritual, medicine, cosmology, divination, and fortune telling. Whether or not you can cultivate it will have to depend on your talent and luck." (1)
"Master, what is the spiritual?" Yang ZiMei very puzzled asks.
Priest YuQing carefully explains it to her.
What is known as "spiritual" is achieving a type of learning through the use of diet, foundation building, profound philosophies, martial arts, talismans, and the like to cultivate the body and mind.
Diet - A type of method to treat illnesses, utilizing tonics, wine, and daily meals to enhance the body.
Foundation Building - A type of method of meditation to control the essence, ki, and spirit to promote strength of body.
Profound Philosophies - A type of approach based on Laozi and Zhuangzi's ideology to cultivate one's heart and nurture one's character.
Martial Arts - A type of method training in various martial disciplines to boost one's physique.
Talismans - A type of psychic cultivated supernatural art, mainly used to avoid, subdue, and terminate evil. A technique to seek luck and avoid calamity. (2)
In conclusion, "spiritual" employs a combination of meditation, cultivating, martial arts, diet, and the like to nurture a complete personality. (3)
After listening to her master's explanations, Yang ZiMei became very excited. She can ascertain that this master and the previous blind master, who was a vagrant charlatan, are not of the same league. He had true knowledge.
"You are now only 5 years old, the perfect age to start cultivating our ki technique. Now, as we continue up the mountain, master will tell you a ki technique scripture. Memorize it to heart."
"Yes, thank you master."
Priest YuQing starts to recite a few words.
Yang ZiMei quickly memorized it and then repeated it back out.
YuQing hadn't thought that her memory was this good, so he recited more words. It turns out that every time he'd spoken, she'd clearly quote them back without a single mistake.
"Has someone taught you this chant before?"
Yang ZiMei shook her head, "The first time hearing this is from master."
"Only needing to hear once to memorize?"
Yang ZiMei nodded, "The
master gave me yesterday, I already read and memorized it all."
From the first time Priest YuQing had seen her, he had felt she was very different, but hadn't expected her to be a prodigy. The texts in
are extremely complex, even someone of university level would require at least a year to tackle it, let alone this five years old child.
"Do you also recognize those words?"
"My…… father taught me."
Yang ZiMei really didn't know how she should explain her sudden extraordinary memory ability. She also doesn't know why she'd suddenly be able to recognize all these unfamiliar words. Of course, she can't say she's a reborn person with two lives either. So, she can only lie.
From her s.h.i.+fty eyes, YuQing could guess that what she said was a lie.
He knows that her origin must be out of the ordinary or else, with his cultivation, how could he be unable to calculate her astrology. (4)
To be able to read and memorize
in a day's time, she's absolutely a rare talent of the era.
Then, he won't say more and continued to recite the words of the ki technique for her, to test whether she truly has such a formidable memory. He recited for ten minutes without pause, finis.h.i.+ng an entire chapter of the ki technique, they've arrive at the front of the mountain top temple.
"Sweetie, let me hear you recite the words I said a moment ago."
1. Here's the link to the from ch4
2.Evil as in the spirits kind.
3. Something like satisfactory, perfect, faultless but as a whole.
4. One of the Five Arts is a combination of Cosmology and Astrology. I'll be using whichever one fits the context better at the time.
TL note: You know… Teaching with memorization as the basis is really weird to me, especially with philosophical stuff. My Mandarin teacher (only one I ever had cuz I escaped) also wanted to teach her cla.s.s that way and lemme tell you, does not work for me at all. Like, I was one of the kids that had to copy the book's contents onto the blackboard.
