IparkedahiredcarinsomescrubofftheroadleadingtoOrpheusFarm,andsmokedararecigarette.Thefierceafternoonsunroastedthroughthemetalroofandawatermiragehunginastreakoverthedryroad.Adayforlizardstolookforshade.They'drunoutofair-conditionedheapsatthehirefirms:I'dhadtotakeoneofthoseoldfashionedjobswhereyoubreathedfreshairbyopeningthewindow.Theairinquestionwasasfreshaslastweek'snewsandashotastomorrow's.

AtfivepastfourEuniceandLynniepa.s.sedunseeinglyacrossmybows,headingbacktoSantaBarbara.Ifinishedthecigaretteandstubbeditoutcarefullyintheflakedchromiumashtray.Ilookedatmyfingernailsfortenminutes.Nospecialinspiration.AthalfpastfourIstartedthecar,pointeditsnosetowardsOrpheus,andwenttocallonUncleBark.

ThistimeIdrovestraightuptothehouseandrangtheornatebell.Ahouseboycame:allonthesamescaleasatJeffRoots'.WhenhewenttofindCulhamJamesIfollowedquietlyonhisheels,somyhost,evenifhehadmeantto,hadnochancetosayhewasout.Thehouseboyopenedthedoorontoasquarecomfortableoffice-sitting-roomandCulhamJameswasrevealedsittingathisdeskwithagreentelephonereceivertohisear.
