"You would have?"
Meg nodded, grinning widely-a blush rising to her already pink cheeks.
Creed's face turned from surprised to serious. "But we're too young, Meg. I love you and I want to be with you forever, but I respect your brothers' wishes."
"Of course, we can't get married now, but I needed you to know, I will say 'yes' someday, when you ask me for real."
Creed wrapped his strong arms around his girl and leaped to his feet. Meg squealed in surprise, laughing beautifully as he swung her around. Meg didn't have to read his thoughts; she knew he felt the same as she did: This was their most perfect moment ever.
Chapter 37 A Wrench in the Works.
Still deep in thought, staring at her new ring with a goofy grin on her face, Meg ambled back to the house to change into her running shorts. She and Creed were planning to take in a few miles before the family was due back. She loved racing him.
She stopped to get herself a glass of water from the kitchen, still in a sweet, dizzy state.
A glint of silver caught her eye. A wrench was lying on the center island. Picking it up, she knew immediately it belonged to the old contractor, himself. Chuck accidentally left it behind because he was thinking about hurrying home to watch his favorite soap opera he never forgot to record.
Sensing Chuck was near she started walking to the front door even before the doorbell rang. Meg reached for the new lever-like knob and yanked the door wide while saying "Oh, Chuck, I found your wrench."
There, standing at the door was Chuck, fuzzy eyebrows and all. And just as she was reaching out to pass the wrench to his well-worn hands, she registered something was very wrong.
"I'm sorry little Miss," he said carefully then as Meg looked on with horror, she saw a figure step out from behind the edge of the front stoop, leap the two steps and twist the kind old contractor's neck with a sickening snap.
"I'm not sorry, little Miss," the man drawled and watched as realization slip across her eyes one moment too late.
A stone-faced man was on her faster than she could react and stabbed her with a syringe. The man released her and charged into the house with a half dozen more like him on his heel-each of them held syringes. Meg didn't even have time to scream, let alone fight back. The last thing she remembered as she slumped to the floor hearing the dull thump of her skull crashing onto the new threshold, was the wide-eyed look of terror in Chuck's dead eyes.
Chapter 38 "WATCH ME".
"Where is everyone?"
"This doesn't look right."
"Why is the front door wide open?"
"There's no one back in the bedrooms either, Mom. Something's very wrong."
"What do you mean?"
"It looks like there was a struggle," Alik swallowed hard, not able to wrap his mind around what even he was saying. "The bedding is all ripped off the beds, chairs knocked over and lamps on the floor. It definitely looks like something bad happened."
Theo was looking around the living room feeling helpless, so he walked over to the front door to close it and saw a thick pool of blood on the threshold of the door.
"Oh dear God, there's blood," he moaned loud enough for Margo, Alik and Farrow to hear. Danny was asleep in Farrow's arms.
Theo yanked the door wide open and saw a body on his front step. In the dead man's hands was a DVD writeable in a jewel case.
The words, "WATCH ME" were written in all caps across the see-through plastic case.
"Oh, dear Lord! Who is he?" Margo gasped.
"I think this was the contractor we hired."
"Should we call the police?" Theo asked, already knowing the answer.
"That's what normal people do. We're not normal because our children aren't normal. Let's watch this first then decide what to do." Margo looked to have aged ten years in ten minutes.
"Should I move the body?" Alik asked in a soft voice.
"Not yet. Just cover him with a sheet, would you please?" Margo was shaking all over, except her legs, of course.
Theo went to his study and retrieved his laptop. His hands were trembling so badly he had to try to push the "on" button several times before he got the machine to understand what he wanted from it. By the time he had the drive open and was inserting the disk, Alik was back from his grisly chore.
Immediately, a voice began talking.
"Good evening, Winter Clan. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Senator Donovan Arkdone, and I am the person responsible for your missing family members. While you are unfamiliar with my work, I am very aware of yours-especially your efforts to evade my colleague Dr. Kenneth Williams."
The black-and-white screen came to life with the image of a beautifully cut figure of a man who looked no older than thirty-five. He wore white trousers that hung low on his tight abdomen and a half-buttoned linen shirt. His dark hair was slicked back with what looked like old-fashioned Brylcreem. He looked like a model in a cologne advertisement, but the words coming out of his mouth didn't match his physical appearance. He was leaning casually against a shiny steel table, his arms crossed, and biceps budging.
"Now don't get me wrong, I believe Dr. Williams is quite despicable, all that blood and skin dripping; completely unnecessary." He motioned to his face and grimaced as though remembering the doctor as he spoke. "Nonetheless, we have a common interest. You're going to have to forgive my soliloquy. I was a professor, and after all those years of teaching, this just comes naturally to me.
"I'd like to back up nearly fourteen years ago. A much younger and healthier-looking Dr. Kenneth Williams requested a meeting with me after attending one of my lectures on psychological warfare, which is my primary field of study. I was guest speaking at your alma mater, Miss Margo. Maybe you remember me?"
Margo snapped her fingers, "That's where I've seen this maniac. He literally hasn't aged a day."
The video seemed to know Margo would take a moment to speak because it paused just long enough for her before Senator Arkdone continued. "Yes, well the nature of the meeting would eventually change your lives, so I suppose it would be only civil of me to share the highlights. Dr. Williams told me all about his new creation: his metahumans. He asked me about my previous efforts in mind control under the beautiful guise of national security. You've got to love politicians, don't you?" The handsome figure smiled slowly, showing perfectly shaped, bright-white teeth.
"My work in that field was quite hush-hush as you can imagine. No one wanted to discuss over a round of golf the torture and whatnot required to break a brilliant-minded child. No, those precious politicians just wanted the end products, not the details about how they were made. I understand you've met one of my Monarch Slaves. Miro Reznikov. He was one of the first MetaMonarchs-a gift from me to Kenneth back when we were freshly starting our joint venture.
"It was a brilliant plan, really. He was having problems with some of his most promising metahumans growing a mind of their own and defying his orders. Isn't that right Farrow Schone?"
Farrow's face was red with rage, but she said nothing.
"Of course, Creed Young was another huge disappointment to my colleague. As for me, I had my mind slaves, whom I call 'candidates,' but they weren't very well trained beyond what they were programmed to do. They were human, fallible and weak. You've met one of my candidates, Dr. Andrews. Michelle, your wife?"
The camera jostled a little as it was placed on a surface and the person holding the camera stepped toward the Senator, turned and faced the camera.
"Oh my God," Theo gasped.
"That's your wife?" Margo asked in a whisper, staring at the woman's perfect physique under stylish clothing.
Alik stayed quiet, letting Dr. Andrews field this question, but he remembered exactly what she looked like. There was no doubt in his mind. The woman on the screen was most definitely the attorney named Michelle Andrews who had been married to Dr. Andrews and living in Kansas with him back when this all started. She was the woman responsible for telling Dr. Williams all about where they were, giving him the distinct advantage.
"Yes," the man in the video spoke on behalf of Dr. Andrews as though anticipating perfectly what would be said. "Michelle is one of my Monarch Slaves. Beautiful, isn't she? Too bad you chose the wrong side. Margo has been nothing but trouble for you all this time, and now she can't even walk?" He shook his head as though full of pity. "If you're man enough, you'll realize what a liability she is to you; the sooner, the better." The broad shoulders of the Senator shrugged as Michelle proceeded to kiss him passionately.
"Later my sweet gazelle. Return to the camera." He smacked her tight rear end as she walked away seductively.
Theo's face was crimson. "Well, that explains a lot," he mumbled.
"So, you can see how interested I would be in having candidates who were more than human-physically and intellectually. We decided an alliance needed to be made. Williams and I would both look for qualified subjects and they'd start at his Facility. Dr. Bjorn would dose them. Doctor please, come forward and wave to the camera."
From behind the camera came a shuffling then a slight man who walked with a lumbering gait moved to stand beside the Senator. "This is Dr. Fredrick Bjorn-a man after my own heart-a true artist in his torture techniques. I'm very pleased to announce that he will be leaving his work with Dr. Williams and joining me in the creation of Monarchs. Welcome aboard, Doctor."
The doctor nodded curtly at the camera and hobbled off-screen. "Anyway, as I was saying, Dr. Bjorn would dose the subject upon their arrival at Williams' Facility. If they survived the first week, half of them would be sent to me at my Monarch asylum. The other half, he would keep for himself to become more metasoldiers. We would both continue to make our subjects meta or monarch, but it was the MetaMonarchs that were the most requested and desired by our numerous high-powered clients, all with very deep pockets." Arkdone smiled and nodded as though remembering the good ol' days.
"Now, what does this all have to do with your missing family members, you may ask? Well, in due time, you'll figure it out. For now, let me show you a new toy a couple of my engineers have developed for me. It started as a side project-something to help keep tabs on my Monarchs who go in as deep sleepers-but it turned into something even more." Arkdone's voice took on a grand tenor as he waved to the huge plastic maze to his left.
"This is exactly what it looks like. It is a rodent testing maze. Not that I have a problem with testing on humans or metas, but sometimes I just need a living, entirely expendable creature. Dr. Bjorn, if you would show our viewers."
Michelle panned the camera to the right and zoomed in on what Bjorn was holding up with tweezers. It looked like a tiny capsule, half the size of a pill you might take for a headache. "That is what should matter to you very much, my Winter Clan," Arkdone's voice spoke off camera.
"A capsule designed specifically for you, each set is made of very special nanoweapons that are injected with this simple syringe gun. They can be placed anywhere in the body because they are programmed to travel and stay in the subject's heart. Oh, but you haven't seen the best part!" He breathed excitedly.
"Dr. Bjorn, if you will." The doctor held a white, pink-eyed rat in one hand and the syringe gun in the other. He shot the device directly into the animal's hip and placed the rat in a plastic box. "Now, what you didn't see Dr. Bjorn do is activate the nanoweapon to start transmitting. They just take a quick twist to activate-genius, really!"
"Dr. Bjorn is walking to the other side of the maze and doing the same thing to the brown rat, injecting it with the other nanoweapon in the set."
Margo, Theo, Alik, and Farrow watched in fascinated horror at what was happening on the fifteen-inch laptop screen. Farrow was still holding the baby, too afraid to put him down anywhere for fear of what may jump out of the shadows to get them.
"Now, I will assist Dr. Bjorn in releasing the rats through the maze and let's see if you can figure out for yourself what will happen. If you'd like to pause the video to discuss your theories with one another, now would be a good time. No?" He smiled wickedly, as though knowing exactly how much turmoil and fear he was creating in his audience. "Well, then. Let us proceed. On the count of three, doctor."
Michelle panned back to fit both men into the shot and caught the exact moment when the rats were released into the maze.
"If you'll notice, we were kind enough to put a nice chunk of cheese right in the center of the fifteen-foot maze. These rats have run this course many times. Just watch," He said excitedly. Alik could almost hear him chuckling strangely off camera.
The rats scurried through the maze. Michelle used the zoom to track their progress. Just as they were nearing the cheese, the white rat exploded into a bloody mess. The brown rat ran ahead to nibble on the prize all for himself, unconcerned with the dead kin seven feet away.
"Whhoo hoo! Did you see that? Absolutely beautiful!"
The camera panned away from Arkdone's ridiculously happy face to the oozing mass that seconds ago was a white rat. One of its pink eyes stared grotesquely from the decapitated head still wobbling upside down.
"The six members of your group whom we have collected have now been implanted with either a trigger," the camera panned to the brown rat sitting on its haunches nibbling a chunk of cheese. "Or with an explosive." The camera rolled back to the mutilated body of the white rat.
"Do you see now?"
"Ah, but you may wonder how they might still be alive? Well, I can assure you, they are. I have every intention of playing with my new toys for a while before I let them go and try to find you or each other. Besides, they will be watching DVDs with this same recording. I mean, it's only fair, right? We may as well lay all our cards out on the table. It's the right and just thing to do, I'd say. Not that you hold your actions to such high standards." Arkdone clasped his hands behind his back and began pacing four steps left, four steps right, and back again, as though he truly were deep in thought giving a lecture.
Alik watched him closely trying to place where he'd seen his demeanor before. It wasn't his handsome physique, but something about the way he moved with skulking grace, like that of-Alik's eyes narrowed-like that of a snake.
"Meg and Evan Winter, Cole Andrews, Creed Young, Sloan Mor, and that wild dog of yours have all been captured by my Monarchs and brought to my asylum where they have been injected with one of the nanoweapons. Three of them are exploders, three are triggers. You will not know which until it's too late. The three exploders could all stand side by side and nothing would happen. Same with the three triggers. Even a trigger and an explosive could stand by one another if they are not a match. But how will you know without killing someone? Not exactly the best odds for trial and error." The Senator smirked at his sick humor.
"The devices are activated when they are in a range of approximately seven feet, just as you saw happened to the rats a moment ago. So, you see, I have put a lot of thought and effort in making sure the Winter Clan is no more. You cannot be together without killing three of your family members." The Senator was looking directly into the camera as he spoke. His eyes glinted with pure evil and for a split second, the pupils seemed to change into black diamond shaped slits-like the reptile Alik saw in him.
"Ripping your family apart, literally, has truly been a delight. You have always been your strongest when you're together. Now, togetherness will rip you to shreds.
"Know I've thought of every contingency; don't even try to remove the devices as they are too embedded and manipulating them would cause the person irreparable damage." Arkdone burst into an all-out-laughter. "On second thought, you go right ahead and work on removing the devices. You'll end up with six vegetables or dead bodies. I'll be watching to see what you decide to do, but either way, I will have won." He tipped his head to the side, and licked his bottom lip with a two-pronged tongue that darted out of his mouth faster than a blink. "You never should have tried to steal from Williams, Margo. Don't you know there are some people in this world whose radar you want to stay far, far below? You chose poorly, and now the children you fought all these years to protect will pay the price for your arrogance." He raised one brow before adding, "Enjoy your first night home from the hospital, Dr. Winter. I'll be in touch." Arkdone raised one gloved hand in a surreal wave and the screen went black.
No one said anything, as they stared at the blank screen.
"Dear Lord, please help us," Margo murmured through the tears that slipped silently down her ashen face.
Chapter 39 Cell #1-Meg Winter.
Meg felt her willowy white wings unfurl and was unafraid of the strength she felt emanate from them. She stretched them wide and looked over either shoulder to see them burst with iridescence even in the dim glow of light. Feeling the joy of self-acceptance she leaped into the sky and beat her wings down with one powerful push against the air. So enamored of her prowess, she wasn't paying attention to her space and paid the price.
Smack!
The top of her head cracked into a stone ceiling hard enough for her to forget to pump her wings. She came crashing down to the packed dirt floor. Thankfully her instincts weren't completely dead. She had curled her wings in tightly to her body so at least she was laying on her much bruised side and not a broken appendage.
Meg tentatively touched the crown of her head where she found it hurt terribly. Her hand came away bloody. Two warm, wet streams slipped down her forehead, and into her eyes. All she saw was red now, the blood stinging as it veiled her dark eyes.
Panic slipped up into her throat in the form of bile. Meg pushed off the ground and stood on shaky legs. She ran with her arms outstretched, searching for a wall in the darkness. She didn't have to run too far before her fingers felt rough brick. She positioned her right palm against it and began walking forward-fingers desperately feeling for a door. The darkness choked her with two clawed hands yanking at the corners of her blood-filled eyes. Just as she was beginning to worry she must have already walked past this point, she felt the rough brick morph into the cold scales of a huge reptile. Stilling, she touched the spot with both hands and felt it move under her fingers. Terror scraped its nails on a chalkboard and screamed in her ears. Meg screamed back.
It spoke.
"Be calm. I am here to make right the wrongs. Choose to walk beside me and I'll give you real wings."
Meg shook her head, confused as she backed away from the scales and voice.
"I'm dreaming, or...I've been drugged." She mumbled through dry, cracking lips.
"Feel them for yourself."
Meg concentrated on the muscles in her back and imagined stretching wings wide. She reached out with her left hand to touch over her right shoulder. There they were. Real wings.
"Is it just a dream, Meg?" the voice seemed to linger on the "s" sounds as it spoke.
"What are you?" Meg asked, curiosity winning over terror.
