"So Dawson, what is it that you are looking for?"
"Let me get it straight I'm here because there isn't another option. I really don't want to give Ceyx any business. We are willing to pay you handsomely." he said in a husky tone.
There was a name drop and a fake card. This was not a good sign. The man was not being honest, that is a bad way to do business.
"Really," I said playing along,
"Yes, twenty large up front, a hundred when it's over." He said charmingly, pulling out a very full black envelope from his front pocket, stuffed with hundred dollar bills, "It's a lot of money and we'll cover your every expensed."
"I think you should go to Ceyx." I mention my best compet.i.tor with a smile,
It was a good time to schedule a visit. The man owns me too much in my last life to be running around happy.
"Don't say that. Name a price. Anything you need. Money is not a problem for us. We just need you to help us help the heir." the man said,
"The heir?" I asked,
"Yes."
He laid the envelope on the table and folded his hands on top of it looking for my reaction. I really wanted to just walk away.
Insulted by the display, but I was not going to lose my calm something so trivial. My aunts taught me better than that I have come a long way from the young blunt child. I also came a long way from my overspending days. Not that I had money in the bank to spare. Money is tight as I tend to have an overflowing inventory that I didn't have time to sort, research and sell. I also have a habit of keeping things that I should be selling.
"So what is it exactly you are looking for?" I ask again glanced over at him.
"It's an heirloom pendant that was owned by his great-grandmother. After her death, it went missing and it will come into its value soon. Valued today it would be worth nothing but she needs it to survived the change as we call it," His words were careful and calculated and his face twisting into an almost inhuman angle for a moment,"It's very important."
"Do you have a picture of it?"
"Here," He said as he produced another envelope from his pocket.
This one was manila and was sealed. The coat of arms on it was of another famous family that I know all too well and wonder how this was happening. How could he have the guts to do something this big and this stupid.
