Chapter 4- Activating A.I.
“Could it be because of the sunstroke a few days ago? Did I fall to the ground and hit my head?” Ji Feng was shocked about how much he had changed.
Throughout the afternoon Ji Feng was still in shock, in order to confirm whether he had been hallucinating beforehand, he took out all of his text books and specifically picked the ones he had never read before.
After reading them, he immediately closed the book. Moments later, he began to recite the contents in his head.
He was both shocked and overjoyed with the result, he could clearly recall pages of information and even the most complicated scientific formulas without a single mistake.
After repeating the experiment, Ji Feng found out that what happened before wasn't a figment of his imagination but was in fact reality.
Ji Feng gawked at the textbook and muttered to himself “I actually have photographic memory!”
But why the sudden change?
Ji Feng soon began to wonder again, he knows the extent of his abilities. It usually took him days of revision before he could memorize these things but now it couldn't have been more different.
After thinking about it for a long time Ji Feng could only shake his head cluelessly, and decided not to think about it.
This means that over the next year, with photographic memory he can easily catch up on everything he missed and get into a good university!
I can do things I could never have dreamed of... with photographic memory I’ll be able to do much more than simply getting into a good university.
As Ji Feng started thinking about his future, his face became slightly red with excitement.
Next to him Zhang Lei asked with concern: “Hey madman, why are you acting so unusual today... you’re not really going crazy right?”
“Go to h.e.l.l!”
Ji Feng tried giving him a stern look but ended up laughing: “I'll still be sane even when you become crazy.”
“Ah you can cuss, that’s how a normal person will react, I'm glad!” Zhang Lei could finally let a sigh of relief: “seriously, I was afraid you wouldn't be able to cope with it and develop some kind of mental illness, don't let Hu Xue Hui affect you.”
Ji Feng could hear how genuine Zhang Leis words and said “Lei, you're right, it’s not worth hurting over a woman like that. That’s why I've already forgotten about her!”
This was a fact the moment he saw his mother's tears, Ji Feng had decided to forget Hu Xue Hui.
He glanced out of habit towards the front, where his eyes finally fell upon the back of Hu Xue Hui who was in the front row, reminded of how stupid he was once again he couldn't help but laugh.
Growing up comes at a price.
The good news is, Hu Xue Hui suggested breaking up early, allowing Ji Feng wake up to reality. If not for that Ji Feng could have delved too deep to what could have been the mistake of a lifetime.
Watching the once familiar back Ji Feng felt nothing but calm, thinking of the saying: “Don’t bully the young because he is poor right now!1 If you love money, then I will make money, until the money is nothing but a number. But I am not doing this to make you regret anything, nor out of pride but for my mother. And to the people who once mocked and laughed at her, they will regret what they did. But all of this, Hu Xue Hui, has nothing to do with you now...”
He looked clearly at Hu Xue Huis back one last time before retracting his eyes. From now on even if we pa.s.s by each other on the streets we will nothing but strangers.
Hu Xue Hui felt like something was staring at her back and turned around, she looked at Ji Feng who was frowning and smiling whilst reading his book.
She puckered her mouth and thought, just another poor person, it doesn't matter how hard he works and even if he get into university what use would it be?
......
The afternoon went by calmly and soon it was time for school to end. Because it was the first day of school there weren't the usual afternoon self-study cla.s.ses, Ji Feng declined Zhang Leis offer for the meal and prepared to leave school instead.
From Ji Fengs point of view, between friends even if it’s just comforting eyes it’s enough to make him feel warm. And thus Zhang Lei several attempts to comfort him was more than enough to make him feel comfortable again.
Zhang Lei knows Ji Feng well, so he didn't say anything else about it.
After the two separated, Ji Feng ran back home, and saw that Xiao Su Mei was busy in the kitchen.
“Mum, I'm home!” Ji Feng shouted loudly.
Xiao Su Mei emerged from the kitchen, with a smiling face, “Feng'er go upstairs first, I've only got one more dish before I finish.”
Ji Feng wanted to help, but seeing that the kitchen was already packed, he could only node and say: “I'm going then.”
Mother and son lived in a house, part of the old town area of Mang Stone county. The houses here as mostly 3-4 stories high, without a balcony, like how a simple hostel would look. The doors are connected side by side facing the corridor.
The houses here are mostly rented, the building Ji Feng lives in is mostly inhabited by low-income people, such as Grandpa Zhang who lives on the second floor who picks and sells sc.r.a.pes for a living, when Ji Feng was little, his mother used to pick sc.r.a.pes for Grandpa Zhang.
Another example is Aunt w.a.n.g on the first floor, who like Xiao Su Mei sells small dishes on a pedaling vendor.
Because the owner set up one public kitchen in the courtyard, as well as large public bathroom, at dinner time everyone will be squeezed together and eventually became very familiar with each other.
People who rent here, with the exception to the landlords, are almost all poor, having some of the lowest income jobs, this caused them to bond together and created a harmonious environment in which people help each other whenever possible.
Ji Feng mother rented a place on the third floor which was originally just a large room, but as Ji Feng grew up, Xiao Su Mei separate it into two rooms, during the day the room is a living room but at night it becomes Ji Fengs room, the dinning tables becomes his desk and the sofa becomes his bed.
Sitting on the sofa, Ji Feng was feeling hesitant, he could not decide whether to tell his mother about the changes to his body.
After thinking about it, Ji Feng decided not tell mother, or at least wait until exam season was over to give her a surprise!
Thinking about how happy his mother would be, Ji Feng let a smile of relief.
“Feng'er, help me with the dishes!” Xiao Su Mei shouted.
Ji Feng immediately opened the door and run down.
Xiao Su Mei diligently prepared four dishes and a soup, watching her son mop up the food, Xiao Su Mei couldn't help but smile.
...
Lying in bed, Ji Feng couldn’t sleep at all, if anyone had these abilities randomly they wouldn't be able to sleep so easily either.
“With photographic memory, getting into university won’t be a problem, the real problem is, how long is this ability going to stay? Will it disappear after a few days?”
Ji Feng couldn’t help but thinking about it, it wasn't until late at night that he gradually fell asleep.
It was at this exact moment, when in his mind a voice resonated: “Integration with host complete, activating A.I.-1.”
1 Don’t bully the young because he is poor right now: 莫欺少年窮- A saying in Chinese about how you shouldn’t look down upon a young person just because he is poor because he has plenty of time, opportunities to work and eventually they might reach new heights and become accomplished.
