Chapter 8 - What's expected of me - Part 1
TL: Eevee
Ed: Oer
"Where are you going?"
Pyongang sat me back down with her strength and used her arms and legs to bind me. The subtlety she exercised in controlling her strength so that it didn't even hurt was unexpected. Her soft arms and legs, and the squishy feeling on my back felt so good that I nearly drooled but I barely held my composure.
"To Sunang-nim."
"You said the only being stronger than you is Sunang-nim. I need a consultation."
I still haven't seen the G.o.d named Sunang. But I can see her whenever I want. Because she'd left a message for me to come to the holy land Namsan whenever I wanted. Not rus.h.i.+ng me, giving me time to adjust can also be said to be part of Sunang's consideration for me.
I heard that she was incredibly interested in me, so I felt that even if I asked for a meeting now she probably wouldn't turn me away.
She's a G.o.d after all? What could she possibly be doing?
Just like in the army, in Korea all the grunt work is done by the subordinates.
"Do you hate me that much?"
Pyongang asked, sounding as if she was close to tears. I glanced at her and it seemed like moisture was pooling at the corner of her eyes.
I can tell. That's an act.
"Yep."
Crrreeeeaaak
"Kyaarrrrgh!"
The pressure enveloping me skyrocketed.
As if I was caught in a giant's hand, my entire body felt like it was about to burst.
"It was a joke, a joke!"
"Of course. There's no way I'd hate Pyongang who's this strong and pretty."
That was no lie but the truth. About 10% of it.
To begin with, normally when you compliment girls you'd say they're pretty and kind. You wouldn't tell them they were pretty and strong. Leaving all that aside and looking at it purely objectively, me clinging to Pyongang would absolutely be the normal scenario. The problem is that I have no idea where she'll spring to from here. My sa.s.sy girl(1) is only attractive because they're behind the silver screen!
I'll probably never say this out loud in my life. My life might be in danger if I did.
"Really?"
"Yep. I'm normally not the type to lie."
Although there are plenty of cases where I don't tell the truth.
"Thank goodness."
Pyongang breathed out a sigh of relief as if she was genuinely relieved. If you're satisfied with this then I'm thankful as well.
"If you said that you really didn't like me I was going to kidnap you and take you where no one else would know and lock you up till you did like me."
Yep. I'm really glad that I didn't say something like that either.
As if she didn't know where I'd go to, Pyongang didn't release her my limbs from her tight embrace. Rather than a 'crrreeeeeaaaaak' you could say she relaxed so it was just 'tight.' If earlier, I was a bug about to burst, now you could say that I just felt like I was tied up with rope? Well, it's soft like those furry handcuffs.
But how long do I have to live like this for?
I don't exactly have a lively personality, but it's kind of awkward to just be sitting here when I have no idea what they want from me. I'd at least like to have some information to prepare.
Flute…. Would probably be a bit difficult, but Pyongang's a princess so maybe she might know something?
Since Pyongang's here, I might as well ask her some questions. I don't think Nakran's going to tell me anything.
"Do you know what I'll be responsible for?"
I'm not an idiot.
The reason they're treating me this well is because I have value. Vice versa, if I didn't have any value it's highly likely that I'd be in danger.
Taking a rough guess, at the very least they will almost certainly ask me for knowledge for the prehistoric era; that is, from the time I lived
When I think about it, there are two possibilities: that this treatment is due to favouritism towards me from the G.o.d called Sunang, or that they know of the differences between the current and the prehistoric civilizations.
In the first case, it shouldn't really matter because there's nothing I can do about it. I can only toe the line the G.o.d sets.
If it's the second case, then we have problems because I don't know what they expect.
What if they randomly ask me to build a plane? Since I majored in mechanical engineering then I can say that I know a fair bit about aviation engineering. It would be hard to build modern airplanes, but if I had an engine, then at the very least I could build an early-mode airplane, but if they ask me to build a computer then I really have no answer to that.
Let alone Neumann's(2) computer, the ENIAC (3) or even the Colossus,(4) I don't have the skill to create even Babbage's(5) mechanical computer. Although if it's Pascal(6) or Leibniz's(7) mechanical calculators I could probably make that after a h.e.l.l of a lot of research.
"Oh~ so that's what you were so worried about~"
Pyongang loosened her lock her limbs had on me. I felt a bit sorry, especially for the sensations that had been on my back.
"It's alright. The people here aren't idiots either. Everyone knows that not all prehistoric humans are equal and there are differences in knowledge. If you did have a high level of knowledge then that would be awesome, but even if you didn't they still wouldn't stop treating you like they are now."
"Because I won't let them."
Ah. I really feel like I'll fall for her.
Maybe it was because of the situation, but was there anyone else aside from my parents that looked out for me this much. Plus she's incredibly beautiful. In my 25 years I don't think I've ever been in this situation before.
"Knowing the letters, that alone means you hold significant value. Although Korean has mostly been deciphered due to the great scholar s.h.i.+n Chaeho-him, but there has been little progress made since his pa.s.sing, and as there were many words left untranslated, things like other nations' languages were mostly untranslated. In addition, just helping us be able to understand the society of the time would be of great help, so Jinsu-nim is a treasure among treasures that no one can approach recklessly."
Is that so.
At Flute's words my head nodded on its own. But I determined that depending on my effectiveness my treatment would no doubt vary significantly, whether it was relative superiority or absolute superiority.
"I have one more thing I want to ask."
"What's commonly known about the prehistoric civilisation?"
Was my question too broad? I knew that it might be but I don't know how to narrow my query any further. Level of science? Level of technology? Would they understand if I put it that way?

You know, when I first took up translating, I never thought the day would come that I would research the history of calculators and pre-Microsoft era computers. So yeah, thank these ↑ guys for y'all pa.s.sing high school maths and whatever you're reading this on now.
