17 Chapter 11

He believes that we can win our little rebellion.

I'm not so sure.

All it would take is a single miscalculation and we will all die.

Our fates lie in the hands of a tactician who herself admits that her judgement is clouded.

And yet, I'm strangely fine with that.

I trust her.

That realisation comes as a shock even to me.

I let out a long breath.

There's no turning back now.

It doesn't take long to realise that both my husband and the kid are being more careful around me.

It's annoying.

I understand their intentions, but I'm not made of spun gla.s.s.

I don't need them to stay a full foot away from me all the time.

Still, I can't bring myself to be truly angry at them.

Not when they are doing it out of misguided attempt to protect me.

Even so, I have to admit that I preferred it when they didn't know.

It takes me by surprise when she speeds into the common room.

Larcen is hot on her heels complaining about her just leaving mid-sentence but she pays him no heed.

Instead she makes a beeline for me.

"Am I going crazy or can you feel it too?"

I only barely stop myself from answering that she's crazy.

Instead I focus on expanding my field of perception.

Yes, there are a lot of feelings oozing from the people around, but nothing that could cause such a reaction.

At least that's what I think until I notice it too.

A Void.

A fast-moving Void.

"You feel it too, don't you?"

I nod.

Everyone in the room is looking at us like we're insane but we don't care.

There aren't very many Voids in the kingdom.

"It's Kent, isn't it?"

She voices what I'm afraid to.

"It might not be."

Even as I say it I will it not to be true.

"If he's coming here then..."

She cuts herself off as the door slams open.

My heart nearly stops as Kent stumbles in a.s.sisted by a young man.

I barely notice as Arabella walks in, sees Riel and practically runs into his arms.

No.

All my focus is on Kent who looks like he'll keel over at any moment.

He notices me then.

"Sonia?"

He looks so painfully confused.

The kid races to his side to try and heal him, but Kent waves him off, never taking his eyes off me.

He lets out a long breath and his face is once again the all too familiar expressionless mask.

"I'll be fine. I just overexerted myself."

He takes another breath before giving me a small smile.

"I'm glad you're alright, Lady Auron."

It's like a dam breaks within me and before I know it I'm crossing the distance between us.

I throw my arms around him holding him close and revelling in the familiar presence that is Kent.

It's something I've missed dearly.

I'm whispering nonsense words, trying to convey my joy and relief, not even caring who's watching.

Even though I can feel him I can barely believe that he's here.

Intellectually I know the circ.u.mstances aren't good and that if he's here then something bad must have happened but…

But I don't care.

Kent's here.

We're all together again.

It feels like there's no way we could lose.

I pull back to drink in the sight of him.

He looks more exhausted than I've ever seen him, but I can't help but think he's never looked better to me.

It takes a while for it to register past my relief that his gaze is fixed on a point behind me.
