Chapter 46 The Fury of the Deputy Chief Officer
Bang! A m.u.f.fled sound was heard!
The deputy chief officer of the NYPD, who wore a four-starred badge, slammed both his hands on the holographic map that was projected on the table. He yelled at his subordinates furiously, “Tell me. How long will it take to catch the b.a.s.t.a.r.d?”
The scene took place inside a mobile command vehicle of the NYPD. Chief Wood, the deputy chief officer of the NYPD, had taken over Chief Bratton’s job after his death. Under normal circ.u.mstances, Mr. Wood would have been promoted. The current situation, however, turned out to be terrible.
Every police in the NYPD was speechless when they were questioned by the deputy chief officer. They underwent inspection, evidence collection, interrogation, as well as an on-the-spot search. Everything was carried out at an extraordinary pace, but, it still took time to seize the criminals.
The NYPD, however, was currently facing a major problem - they were running out of time.
Lena Fox’s kidnapping case had aroused the concern of the entire United States. The President had even called to ask about the current situation. The media also reported the news frantically. Countless of people were watching the cops’ speed at hostage rescue.
However, despite working hard for two days, they did not achieve any results.
All of the kidnappers were dead and the hostages were rescued. Is this a perfect ending? No… the chief police officer was dead as well!
It was originally a win-win situation for both parties. However, the situation took a hundred and eighty degree turn and it eventually became the biggest disgrace for the NYPD - the criminal killed Chief Bratton in front of hundreds of cops. People around the world also witnessed his death through the live broadcast.
The public immediately became tumultuous. The entire United States, including the President, had requested for the police to capture the criminal as soon as possible in order to safeguard public order, as well as to protect the dignity of the police.
However, Mr. Wood, the deputy chief officer, felt as if he was sitting at the edge of the mouth of a volcano, ready to be swallowed up by public opinion. Even though it seemed like an ordinary case, any sane person would realize that there was something wrong it. There were simply too many suspicious events in the case, especially, during the time when Chief Bratton was escaping for his life.
Despite that, recapturing the criminal would be their current top priority. Their stress could be instantly halved if the guy named Victor Hugo was captured. This guy’s aggression had already far exceeded their initial expectations.
Two special force unit members were killed in the kidnapping case of the hospital, followed by three of them killed and two of them wounded in the Society of Divide Word in Fifth Avenue. One of them was even petrified by the incident.
Mr. Wood wanted to curse when he encountered this situation - the New York SWAT team was known in the past for their strength, professionalism, and high efficiency. However, now, they had turned into weaklings, as they were killed one after the other, like chickens in a slaughterhouse.
At that point in time, there was a large number of police mobiles and emergency vehicles parked outside the Society of Divide Word. There were more than a hundred police officers and more than two hundred journalists surrounding the scene. The gla.s.s door that was smashed by the armored vehicle still had its pieces shattering all over the place. Several bodies were loaded into the body bag, waiting to be carried out from the inside.
Chief Wood could see excited journalists who squeezed forwards through the bulletproof window of the mobile command vehicle. They were trying to capture photographs of the corpses. They screamed at their lenses as they tried to exaggerate the seriousness of the case.
Zhou Qingfeng has been hailed by the media as the world's most dangerous criminal of the twenty-first century! He had arrived at the maximum level of his hostility!
The repeated ma.s.sacre of the whites by a Chinese man! Such a frightening t.i.tle was about to appear on the headlines of major media outlets. However, the police’s investigation on Zhou Qingfeng had arrived at a dead end - everyone knew about the person who committed the crime, yet, they could not catch him.
Lena Fox did a big favor to help with Zhou Qingfeng’s current situation. Escaping via a helicopter was the one and only right decision at that instant.
If he were to escape via the sewers, Zhou Qingfeng’s escape route would be locked on by the security cameras that were scattered across New York. If they did indeed escape via the sewers, judging by how hard-pressed Chief Wood was, he would definitely order the New York SWAT team to launch an ambush.
The police, however, could not trace them as they escaped via the sky. There were simply too many routes in the sky. They could fly to anywhere they wanted and the number of paths that they could take were basically limitless. Furthermore, no one actually saw the criminal escape. Thus, the NYPD did not even know which direction they should start their pursuit from.
Zhou Qingfeng would be able to travel over hundreds of kilometres based on the speed of the helicopter. He could even escape to Canada if he was given more time. There was no way the police could chase him at his speed.
He felt resentful, but Chief Wood forced himself to calm down. He still hoped to find the criminal using other means, for instance, satellites, radar, or even using a covert listening device. He had issued an arrest warrant for the police of the United States and offered a reward of five million dollars for clues in an attempt to plunge Zhou Qingfeng into the American version of the People's War.
However, it took time. News may be heard in the next second, or it may even never be heard. After a restless wait, the time was six in the evening. The cataclysm was about to arrive as three days had almost pa.s.sed.
However, news was heard at around five-thirty in the evening. Someone reported that they had found the helicopter which Zhou Qingfeng and Lena Fox had used for their escape.
“Where is it? Where is it?” Chief Wood asked, excited. He no longer feared if Zhou Qingfeng were to cause trouble. He only worried that he would escape once again, “Is that b.a.s.t.a.r.d still in the United States?”
The reporting cop nodded his head hurriedly, “The suspect has yet to leave our national border. In fact, he…”
It was extremely big news for Chief Wood that they did not make their way out of the United States. At least now, he did not have to worry about getting involved in diplomatic affairs. He then asked, even more excitedly, “Is he five hundred kilometers away from us?”
The cop that got interrupted nodded his head once more, “The suspect did not escape far.”
Chief Wood was as excited as if he was having an o.r.g.a.s.m, “Hahaha… I’m blessed! The helicopter must have malfunctioned. Hence, they had no other choice but to land en-route. Is he now in a city that’s near us?”
The cop forced a smile, “Sir, in fact, the suspect didn’t even leave New York.”
“What… he didn’t even leave New York?” the deputy chief officer’s excited face immediately turned stiff. He yelled, “That b.a.s.t.a.r.d didn’t even leave New York? Does he know that the cops are looking for him all over the place? Is he out of his mind?”
“Where is he hiding? Queens? Did he flee back home? That must’ve been the case. Most criminals have a habit of fleeing back home after committing a crime. "
The reporting cop got interrupted repeatedly. However, he could only patiently reply, “Sir, the suspect did not go to Queens as well. He’s actually still in Manhattan.”
“Still in Manhattan?” Chief Wood felt humiliated. He felt that he had been fully disrespected by the criminal. He yelled furiously, “How could he still be in Manhattan? Does he really think that all of us are idiots? He didn’t even get out of Manhattan despite the amount of time that he had?”
“In fact, the suspect flew no further than five kilometers from where he got onto the helicopter. The helicopter was found near the University of Columbia. Thus, we believe that he’s still in Manhattan.”
The deputy chief officer was indeed, angry. He cursed, “b.a.s.t.a.r.d! b.a.s.t.a.r.d! b.a.s.t.a.r.d! How dare he stay so close to us? He’s actually ignoring our abilities and mocking the quality of the NYPD.”
“I will catch him for sure and I will make him regret for what he’s done. No… I now order that he can be killed on the spot! Let that b.a.s.t.a.r.d goes to h.e.l.l and regret for it.”
