Yun Bixue felt that this child was really sensible and obedient. One could not help liking her.

She helped Yangyang put a toy into her hands. Her hands touched the brick bed, which felt really warm from the heat. She stretched out her hand and touched the bed as she asked, “Why is this brick bed so hot?”

“It is. Since the weather is really cold in winter, we would burn more firewood every day. The firewood piled up in the courtyard was collected during autumn when I went up to the hills to chop wood with my Dad. There's a lot of gra.s.s too that we picked from the ground. These would be enough to last us for one whole winter.”

Xie Limo patted Su Lenghan's elbow and said, “No wonder you became more tanned.”

“It would be strange if I didn't since I work under the sun every day. But I quite like living like this. My skin color is considered healthier now.”

As they chatted, Su Lenghan had already boiled the tea and proceeded to usher Xie Limo and Yun Bixue onto the brick bed.

Yun Bixue felt a little awkward, while Xie Limo was more at ease. However, once he sat down on the brick bed, he felt a little awkward as he did not know where to put his legs.

Seeing that Su Lenghan crossed his legs on the brick bed, Xie Limo followed suit, but he was really not used to this and was unable to imitate his posture exactly.

Yun Bixue nodded her head as she listened. She did not sit on the brick bed and turned to look at the kitchen.

There was a wide smile on Mother Su's face. She was busying herself around, just like a normal countryside lady.

She had a contented look on her face as well. There was no trace of grievance or arrogance in her expression, as though she had lost all her grandeur, retaining only the plainest side of her.

“Dad, lower the heat. It's too high. Put less gra.s.s in.”

“I put them in already. Let it burn like this first, and I will put less gra.s.s later.”

“Alright. Go and help me wash the vegetables…”

“Which vegetables?”

“Those cabbages.”

Yun Bixue felt really sentimental as she watched and listened. From the looks of it, Father Su and Mother Su lead a pretty decent life now, just like the old couples in the countryside, supporting each other in whatever they did.

She sighed. No one would have thought that the once arrogant and fussy Mother Su would become so simple and warm to others. Father Su, who was once the head of the household and did not have to lift a finger for anything, also started to help Mother Su out with the housework.

Su Lenghan heard her sigh and followed her gaze towards the kitchen. A trace of gentle glow appeared in his eyes as well.

Su Lenghan explained, “At first, my Dad and Mum were not really used to the lifestyle here. However, the culture here is really simple and honest. Life here is very simple and happy as well. Afterwards, they grew to like such a way of life and became much happier than they were at the Su family.”
