Chapter 8. Job (2)

‘Leader?’

While the text colors of the other jobs were white, this one was shown in blue. It probably caught my attention more because the rank was rare, but I should read the explanation of each job first.

[Warrior - Average Rank]

- A warrior is needed in a party since they’re the vanguards. Although they can’t be considered as effective, they’re able to easily adapt to a sword and shield, a spear, or an ax. The player will be able to change to other similar jobs such as savage warrior, knight, paladin, cavalry, or mercenary. The endurance, stamina, and strength stats will increase by one point.

[Archer - Average Rank]

- The archer is capable of ranged attacks and will acquire basic knowledge of the bow and arrow. Not only can they change to similar jobs like rogue or assassin, but they can also change to spirit archer and magic archer, which are the high-ranked archer jobs. The agility stat will increase by three points.

[Mage - Average Rank]

- This is a long-ranged job that allows the player to use magic. They’ll acquire basic magic knowledge and afterward, they can change their job to black mage, alchemist, or summoner. The player’s magic stat will increase by three points.

All three jobs weren’t that bad.

The warrior increased three of the stats that I had a difficult time increasing and for the archer, it provided basic knowledge of the bow and arrow. As someone that preferred to stand in the back and do the easy work, the archer was a really good job for me. The mage was the same and the fact that it was going to increase my nonexistent magic stat caught my attention even more. However, I was most curious about the rare[1] leader job.

[Leader - Average Rank]

- This job barely has any combat abilities. Rather than being at the front of the battle, the leader figures out the situation and gives orders, giving them a wider field of view. There’s no information about what kind of job the player will be able to change to later. The player’s intelligence stat will increase by one point.

Honestly, before reading the description, my mind was already set on the leader job. However, after reading it all, my head started hurting.

The leader’s ability wasn’t bad, but...

‘What does it mean by a wider field of view?’

And it was only going to increase my intelligence stat by one point. The other two jobs increased stats by three points, but for this job, I would be losing two points. But this wasn’t the end of it.

‘Later…’

It worried me that there wasn't any information about my future jobs.

Thinking about it now, the swordsman job that Kim Hyun-Sung had was also an average job. Based on his stats, I’m sure he would be able to obtain a rare or an epic job. Since he possessed swordsmanship as his attribute, I guess he was rejecting the swordsman job for now. It seemed like he was more focused on the path he knew and walking on that path rather than what was efficient right now.

While contemplating for a bit, I saw Kim Hyun-Sung walking towards me.

“Looks like the jobs opened up for you,” he said.

“Yes,” I answered.

If I knew which job was good and the direction of its growth like Kim Hyun-Sung did, then it would be easier for me to choose, but since my first decision will decide everything moving forward, I couldn’t help but think about it even more.

While I was thinking about how I could get advice from Kim Hyun-Sung without being too obvious, Park Deok-Gu opened his mouth. “Hyung-nim, this…”

“What is it?” I asked.

“I’m in a dilemma. The rank of the warrior and priest are average, but the shieldbearer’s rank is rare, so I’m not sure which one I should pick,” Park Deok-Gu explained.

“A priest?” I asked.

“Well, it looks like I can change to a job that’s similar to a holy warrior later…and it looks like the warrior can change to a berserker…but isn’t rare better than average though?” Park Deok-Gu asked.

Considering how his potential stats were focused on stamina and probably endurance, shieldbearer wasn’t a bad choice at all.

“The shieldbearer…” I started.

“Well, it says that the job focuses on shielding. It says that I will get an advantage whenever I use my shield, but the problem is that there isn’t any information about the jobs later on. Also, it says that my strength will decrease by two points, but my endurance and stamina will increase by three points,” he explained.

“That doesn’t sound that bad at all,” Kim Hyun-Sung commented in my place.

Even if we didn’t ask first, he was trying to help without being too obvious.

“Your endurance stat seems high and even though the decrease in your strength may be the penalty, the fact that your endurance will increase that much more is pretty surprising. Even if your strength decreases, you will still obtain four stat points,” Kim Hyun-Sung explained.

‘Really?’

If this was an online game, a vanguard and a tanker were necessary. After seeing his reaction, it seemed like this place had a similar system. Tankers were just as rare as priests.

“Hm…is that so?” Park Deok-Gu said.

“Have your attributes opened up?” Kim Hyun-Sung asked.

“Not yet,” he answered.

“For me, I chose swordsman as my average job and as for my attribute, I possess an attribute that increases my offensive power. I wanted to choose warrior since it increases strength, but I thought choosing swordsman was better since it greatly increased the agility stat. Even to this day, I still think I made a good choice when I made that decision back then,” Kim Hyun-Sung explained.

“Oh,” I said.

He was trying to discreetly express his opinion.

The job wasn’t the only thing that mattered. What mattered was the stat’s balance, whether one’s attribute existed, and the ability of the attribute. I came to the conclusion that a job was the most effective when those three conditions were met.

Kim Hyun-Sung didn’t strongly insist on it, but he was hoping that Park Deok-Gu would pick shieldbearer, the rare-ranked job. “What do you think, hyung-nim?” Park Deok-Gu asked me.

“I agree with Kim Hyun-Sung. We don’t know if you’ll obtain an attribute that’ll increase your attack, but Mr. Hyun-Sung can make up for the lack of offense, and considering the current situation, it’s definitely not bad since your stats are going to increase by four points…still, it’s your choice,” I explained to him.

“Hm…the priest is…” he started.

“The worst,” I said, finishing his sentence.

Even if he could change his job to a holy warrior later, I felt that being a priest wasn’t the best job. Also, Park Deok-Gu’s magic stat wasn’t that high either.

After some time had passed, I saw Park Deok-Gu’s body shining blue for a moment. He succeeded in changing his job.

“Did you pick?” I asked.

“I think shieldbearer is the best one,” he answered.

“Oh yeah?” I said.

“I have no doubt that Kim Hyun-Sung will do well and I know hyung-nim will protect me in the future as well, so leaving the offensive power to someone else may not be such a bad idea. Well, if the mage job shows up later then I can show my offensive powers then, right? It’s a bit scary standing at the very front, but I think I can do it,” Park Deok-Gu explained.

“You made a good choice,” I said, complimenting him.

Kim Hyun-Sung nodded as well.

“If you don’t mind, can I ask what you chose as your job?” Kim Hyun-Sung asked me.

I remained quiet for a moment and then answered. “I haven’t made my decision yet, but warrior, archer, and mage are listed as average rank. Leader is listed as rare.”

“Leader…”

As Kim Hyun-Sung said it, I noticed his face flinch a bit.

‘Is it a trap?’

I couldn’t help but think that maybe the leader job was a trap.

“Hm…I see,” Kim Hyun-Sung said.

“Yeah, for some reason, that job fits you very well, hyung-nim!” Park Deok-Gu said, complimenting me.

“R-Really?” I asked, stuttering.

“I never said it, but aren’t you the type to lead? I can just imagine you waving your hand coolly while standing in the back…yeah, I’m sure we’ll win if you lead,” he explained.

Even though Park Deok-Gu was acting excitedly when I mentioned the leader job, I couldn’t call myself a leader.

‘It’s because I don’t know any strategies.’

I had never read any strategy book before. I wasn’t good at go or chess, and I wasn’t exactly smarter than others.

The only leadership experience I had was when I became the raid leader of an online game whose name I couldn’t even remember anymore.

Honestly, my character was more like a trickster than a leader. Actually, having a rogue-like job may not be such a bad idea.

“I’m ready to receive your order, hyung-nim!” Park Deok-Gu said energetically.

‘This guy…’

He was acting pretty cute. I guess he already assumed that I was going to pick leader for my job.

“It says that the job will widen my field of view and my intelligence will increase by one point. I’m sure you’ve seen the description for the other jobs,” I explained.

“It seems like there isn’t much you can gain. Normally, the other jobs increase one’s stats by at least three points…” Kim Hyun-Sung said. It sounded like he was trying to stop me, which made me feel like the leader job was truly a trap.

“You’re a leader hyung-nim! A leader!” Park Deok-Gu said excitedly.

I ignored Park Deok-Gu since he was the only one that was excited and decided to think about it more.

“It may look good now since the rank is rare, but I can’t help but be worried about the fact that you can’t see the jobs that you can change to later on. It’s possible that the jobs that’ll appear later on will be average-ranked jobs. Choosing your first job is very important, so…”

“Hey, hyung-nim is a leader! A leader! Please lead me!” Park Deok-Gu yelled, interrupting Kim Hyung-Sung.

“...”

“Ki-Young, I think picking archer isn’t a bad choice either. The fact that you can use a bow is surprisingly advantageous…if you can provide support from far away, it’ll be a huge help and later, the rogue job…”

“I’m telling you, hyung-nim is a leader! A leader! Follow me!” Park Deok-Gu said, interrupting Kim Hyun-Sung again.

“Increasing the stats first…will be more beneficial,” Kim Hyun-Sung said.

“The leader job can really bring out hyung-nim’s strengths! He has to pick leader no matter what!” Park Deok-Gu yelled.

“Archer is…” Kim Hyun-Sung started.

“Leader!”

“The archer…”

“Leader!”

“Archer…”

“Leader!”

“Archer is definitely!”

“Leader!”

“Then the archer job…”

I became more confused because of how both of them were acting.

‘The…’

If this continued, I felt like the remaining monsters around us would attack us by any moment now.

Kim Hyun-Sung seemed like he knew a bit about the leader job, but it seemed like he wanted me to pick archer so that he could help me grow. However, he didn’t know that my potential stats were really bad.

‘I just want to pick archer too.’

But if I picked leader, then that would be a problem too, and I couldn’t forget about mage either because even though my magic stat was nonexistent, I felt like I could use my intelligence with it since it had the highest points.

‘What should I do…’

The important thing to do was to choose a job that would really bring out my strengths since my Mind’s Eye explained that there was no hope for me.

“Oh…” I said.

In the end, I couldn’t help but choose the job that was the most efficient. I closed my eyes and as I made a decision, there was a bright light, and I felt my body changing ever so slightly.

“Whew…”

I succeeded in changing my job.

Kim Hyun-Sung and Park Deok-Gu spoke up at the same time.

“Did you choose leader? Or archer?”

1. The job is average, this just means that it’s a rarely-seen job ☜
