One Summer Evening Part 88

Austin had dropped to his knees and, with tears in his eyes, said, "You

bet, son. Now and forever."

Cassie had watched with tears streaming down her face as they had hugged each other. She had thought that was perhaps the happiest moment of her life, that nothing could ever outdo it.

But now she wasn't so sure. She hadn't come off that emotional or physical high since the night she had come here to the farm. Duringtheir fierce lovemaking, Austin had asked her to marry him, a deed theyhad done three days later.

Shortly thereafter, they had moved to the farm, where they planned tolive until they could build a new home, having chosen a perfect place onthe property.

"What are you thinking about?" Cassie finally asked after he remained quiet for a while.

"The day we got married."

"Me too." She propped herself on an elbow and peered into his eyes.

"I haven't stopped being happy since."

"Even though your daddy didn't marry us? I hated that for you, thinking it must have dimmed your day."

"It made me sad, but that was Daddy's call, and he has to live with his decision."

"I think he regrets it now."

"Probably, although he's never said that to me." "Me either," Austin said ruefully.

Cassie wasn't sure that James would ever relent. While he loved them both, he hadn't been able to justify their marriage in his mind or in God's eyes, and as a result, he had refused to marry them in his church.

Her mother, on the other hand, had given them her blessing. But because of James, she hadn't attended the wedding, either. Still, Tyler spent time with them, even if she and Austin did not.

"What if James never forgives us?"

"I'll deal with that then," Cassie responded.

"Right now, I'm giving him all the space he wants. But his approval or

disapproval is not going to change my life."

"What is?"

She smiled and said, "As if you didn't know."

He rose up and kissed her again, then said, "You're an amazing woman," I

don't see that."

"You'realso the strongest woman I've ever known. I can't believe all

you've been through since you've been back. Most women would have gone off the deep end."

"I'll admit it's been rough. But the bad times are behind us. Both

Lester and Randall got their just deserts.

"And the hotel's getting a facelift."

She grinned.

"Something that still sticks in your craw. Right?"

"Watch it, woman. That smart mouth might get you in trouble."

"Good."

Austin chuckled, then his features sobered.

"We're talking about a lifetime here, you know?"

She opened her arms to him.

"I can't think of a better life sentence than that."
