959 The Start Of The Werewolf System
Dean watched the video and clearly saw that a pack of Werewolves had attacked the NIRV base. It wasnt some type of Wolf Altered or anything like that.
He recognized the movements, the way they transformedeverything that was different between Altered and Werewolves.
There werent several packs of Werewolves out there. Although the attackers looked young and Dean didnt recognize any of them, they could only have come from one pack.
It has to be Lupus and his group, Dean said.
Oh really? What took you so long to figure that out? Rickle asked. What Im asking is why a pack of Werewolves attacked one of the NIRV bases. Youve been acting strange since you came in, so my inkling is that you have something to do with it.
Rickles eyes started to glow an even deeper red.
Weve worked together for years. Dont make me force the truth out of you.
Dean was confused. At first, he thought Rickle was trying to blame him for the Werewolves' attack on NIRV. But as he reflected on Rickle's words, he started to realize the connection. The attack was too soon after he had met with Lupus.
Im sorry, Dean said. I didnt think this would happen. I... I went to visit Lupus. I wanted to persuade him to comply with the vampires demands so that the vampires and Werewolves could stop fighting.
If that happened, then then I could finally return home to my family.
When Dean poured out his heart, his voice filled with genuine ache, Rickle pulled back, his eyes no longer glowing. He shook his head in disbelief.
I just told him what happened, how I was no longer a Werewolf. He could tell that the moment he saw me, Dean explained. But I didnt tell him what you werejust that I had the process done at NIRV.
And now he must be attacking this place for one of two reasons, Rickle replied. Either he wants to eliminate NIRV, which has a way to remove Werewolves, or hes after the fur to use it for himself. Rickle sighed. So how did the talk go anyway? Im assuming not well, given the situation were in now.
Dean shook his head. Things are different now. Im no longer part of the Pack. The moment I became another Alpha, my words no longer held sway. I was in no position to tell him to listen to the vampires, so I said nothing.
Rickle returned to his console and began typing, pulling up information on each of the employees who had been killed. He eventually stopped typing.
Im not sure the Werewolves will be able to get very far, Rickle said. Most of the NIRV employees know nothing, and even those who do only know its a top-secret project, not much more.
I just hope for your sake that they dont resort to more extreme measures.
Back in the Wolfs Pool Club, everyone in the Howlers underground room listened intently to Deans story.
Gary, in particular, was deeply engaged. Initially, he harbored a lot of resentment towards his fathernever explaining, never writing, never revealing his whereabouts while his family struggled, and his mother suffered.
However, trying to understand Deans perspective, Gary found himself relating more and more. Maybe he wouldnt have thought the same way before, but now, with a pack of his own, he understood his father's motives, allowing his hatred to soften.
There were a few more strikes on NIRV after that, Dean continued. But they never managed to find the fur.
However, one day, the fur was stolen from us. Rickle ran an investigation and found that a large number of items had been stolen.
The two of us ran investigations within NIRV ourselves to find out what happened and discovered there was a traitor among us.
Someone who was working for a particular gang and handing them NIRV products. Care to guess which gang the NIRV employee was working for?
Everyone pondered the question until Kai came up with the answer.
The Phoenix Gang, Kai said.
Everyone was surprised by his answer. They wondered how he had arrived at that conclusion, but Kai had been following the trail for a while before the others.
Correct, Dean confirmed. The Phoenix Gang had many people from various places in their pocket.
Right, they even had some of the White Rose Agents helping them out, and they were pretty high-ranking, Gary added.
The product was stolen by the Phoenix Gang, and Im pretty sure you can guess who ordered itLupus and his pack. But even a gang of that caliber had to be cautious with a company like NIRV. They, too, had their connections and retrievers in their back pocket.
So the idea was to move the product through a long line of other gangs. This was a way to obscure the trail of where the product went.
Every step of the way, Rickle and I were one step behind because of this. The second tactic was the blame game. NIRV needed a reason to attack one of the Kings, and using smaller gangs made it hard to start a war.
Although NIRV has strong individuals, its not a gang itself or a large army. Any movement we could make would take a long time to produce results.
I think Ive figured out where this story is going, Kai interjected. One of these small gangs used and controlled by the Phoenix Gang was the Underdogs.
The look on everyones face was one of disbelief as things started to make sense.
Right, Dean confirmed. The attack by the Phoenix Gang wasnt random. The product meant to be delivered to them and forwarded to Lupus gang had been lost in Slough. As for where it ended up
Dean lifted his hand and pointed directly at Gary. This is how you came into contact with the Werewolf System.
