Chapter 88: Opportunity

Perry was feeling extremely sorry for itself, and even though it was in agony, it could only grit its own teeth and suppress it. Looking at the menacing gleam in its master's eyes, it could only repress the rest of the agonized howls that were about to come out of its mouth.

At the same time, it was feeling rather perplexed, and it was wondering whether its master was angry at Lana for her attitude or if it was angry at something else.

Meanwhile, the owner of the tailor shop was under the impression that Perry's howl was a signal that was urging him to work faster, and he immediately picked up the pace, even though he was already working quite quickly. Soon, sweat began to pour down from his forehead, and the back of his loose-fitting robes was also soaked with sweat.

Thus, Lana had only strolled around the shop a few times before the shop owner completed his work.

Lana took a glance at the profusely sweating shop owner, then cast her gaze toward the pair of menacing skeletons, and she couldn't help but feel rather amused.

She entered the changing room to put on her new clothes, and she emerged with a carmine shawl draped over her shoulder, extending down to her waist. Beneath the shawl was a white blouse, which had had its sleeves modified upon request from Lana, turning them from tight-fitting tapered sleeves into wide and loose-fitting ones. The waist section of the blouse had also been tapered, and it was accompanied by a light and airy green skirt.

It had to be said that clothing aesthetics in the north were different from that of the south, and the color combinations were also very different. Back in the south, there was no way that Lana would've chosen such a clothing combination that made her look so old and formal, but after looking around, she discovered that most of the styles and color combinations in the shop were similar to the set of clothes that she was wearing, so she could only conform to the local standards. Of course, another potential contributing factor to this was the fact that Kenon was a very rural town.

However, the modifications to the sleeves and the waist of the blouse were a fantastic touch, giving the set of clothes a sense of exuberance and vitality.

Of course, the burly skeleton wasn't interested in inspecting the clothes that Lana had just changed into. It was still locked in an internal conflict with regard to whether it should follow Lana.

As for Perry, it was thinking about how to reconnect its own broken leg, and no matter how much it wanted to continue gawking at Lana, it didn't dare to continue doing so in its master's presence.

Meanwhile, the shop owner had his head lowered the entire time, not daring to raise it for fear of catching the attention of the burly man with the piercing blue eyes.

The young nobleman and the traveling poet outside still hadn't left, and they continued to watch Lana, just as they had been doing so this entire time. The nobleman was confident that Lana had only ignored his companion's approach as he was a traveling poet. Unfortunately, the initial approach from the traveling poet had undoubtedly left a sour taste in Lana's mouth, and with that in mind, he couldn't help but turn to his companion with a disapproving look once again.

There were no issues with the new clothes, but there was an issue surrounding payment.

The Loonies that Lana had been carrying with her had been lost during her battle against the burly skeleton.

She cast her gaze toward the burly skeleton, indicating for it to pay the bill. If the burly skeleton had eyes, then it would've undoubtedly rolled its eyes in response.

As it turned out, it didn't have any money, either.

Thus, an awkward atmosphere began to permeate throughout the room, but both Lana and the burly skeleton refused to acknowledge it.

When it came to things like awkwardness, as long as you don't acknowledge it, then it would always be left to someone else to feel awkward. Both Lana and the burly skeleton were well aware of this, while Perry was completely oblivious to what was happening. The only other person in the room was the owner of the tailor shop, so he was the only one feeling awkward.

The traveling poet was eager to redeem himself, and he immediately pounced on this brilliant opportunity.

"We meet again, beautiful lady!" the traveling poet greeted as he dragged the young nobleman into the tailor shop.

"With just a simple change in clothes, your beauty is sufficient to put even the most gorgeous of celestial maidens and goddesses to shame." The praise from the traveling poet was as superficial as ever, and as he was speaking, he gently nudged the young nobleman beside him with his elbow before taking a subtle glance at the owner of the tailor shop.

The young man immediately understood what the traveling poet was hinting at, and he approached the shop owner to pay the bill for Lana's clothes.

It had to be said that the traveling poet had been a lot more intelligent with his second approach, alleviating the awkward atmosphere in the room while also presenting his companion with the opportunity to leave a positive impression on Lana.

Of course, Lana wasn't very receptive to this at all, and she continued to watch the duo with a cold expression. However, the fact of the matter was that the young nobleman was paying her bill, so she couldn't repay his kindness with open hostility.

"Now that you've paid for my clothes, the next step would be to invite us out for a meal, right?" Lana said as she approached the young nobleman with a cold smile that was as stiff and forbidding as a sharp ridge on a snowy mountain.

Lana was extremely well-versed in the tactics that noblemen used to pick up women, and even though she had lost most of her memories, this was a piece of knowledge that she still retained.

Looking at the cold smile on Lana's face, the young nobleman was placed in a rather awkward situation, and he didn't know whether he should nod in agreement or shake his head in denial.

Even though the young nobleman had just paid for Lana's clothes, he didn't dare to take her lightly at all. Judging from her looks and her disposition, he knew that this was definitely no ordinary woman, and the fact that she was so disdainful toward him was only further confirmation in his mind that she was a figure of extremely lofty status.

After that, Lana left the young nobleman on the spot, then passed him by without a single backward glance.

However, after emerging from the tailor shop, she turned around before asking, "We've only just arrived here, so we're completely unfamiliar with this place. Are there any good restaurants that you can recommend in this town?"

The nobleman faltered slightly upon hearing this, following which a hint of elation welled up in his heart. Is this... an invitation?

The traveling poet hurriedly gave him a light shove from behind upon seeing this, urging him not to pass up this opportunity.

"Ah, yes, I do," the young nobleman hurriedly replied, and his flustered display was rather amusing to Lana.

Lana was naturally aware of what the young nobleman's motives were, and she was obviously not someone who would casually hook up with a stranger. However, the problem was that she knew nothing about herself, nor did she have any information on Erwin. Thus, not only was this an opportunity for a free meal, she could also try and coax some information out of the young nobleman.

Judging from the attire worn by the young man, Lana was immediately able to identify that he was either a noble or hailed from a wealthy family. However, for some reason, she felt an instinctive sense of distaste toward people like him, even though she had no memory of her own past.

The young nobleman was walking along beside Lana, and after taking a long while to muster up his courage, he finally asked, "Madam, may I ask why you always look so cold and forbidding? Is it really such a distasteful experience to be in my company?"

Of course, Lana couldn't tell him that she was in a foul mood because her memories had been devoured by a magic beast.

With that in mind, an amused smile appeared on her face, and she realized that she had been unnecessarily hostile to the young man. In fact, it was rather unfair that he had been treated with such disdain when he had done nothing up to this point aside from pay for her clothes.

"That's not the case. I'm just in a bad mood due to something else entirely. If my attitude has made you uncomfortable, then please accept my apologies," Lana said in a serious voice.

"Ah, there's no need to apologize," the young nobleman hurriedly said with a wave of his hands.

"My name is Lana, and I come from the south." Lana didn't know herself very well, so she was unaware that it had always been difficult for her to try and appease those who she had no interest in. Thus, her apology seemed a little excessive, and her self-introduction was also very cold and completely devoid of warm emotion. Perhaps this was already the utmost respect she was able to afford to someone like the young nobleman. For someone like her, the most difficult thing was to force herself to do something against her own will.

Due to the loss of most of her memories, she was unable to remember that she had once given a man her unreserved warmth and affection, even though they had only been with each other for a short time.

The young nobleman relaxed a little upon hearing Lana's self-introduction, and he responded in kind. "I am Aike Dario from the city of Intelar."

What was rather disappointing to him was that this woman from the south was most likely unaware of the Dario Family's influence in the Fano Dukedom, so he was unable to flaunt his own identity and status to curry her favor.

"What kind of reaction should I be displaying to that? How do other women normally react when they hear your name?" Lana asked with a serious expression. "Perhaps I should imitate them so as to not be rude."

Aike was completely rooted to the spot upon hearing this, and he was at a loss for words. Never had he encountered such a sharp and wilful woman in his life.

Of course, he had never met a woman as stunningly beautiful as Lana, either.

"You're very humorous, Ms. Lana," Aike said with a smile.

"I could tell from your expression that you were a little disappointed, so I was trying to cheer you up a bit."

"Ah, no, I wasn't..." Aike was feeling rather awkward that his disappointment had been spotted, and he didn't know how to explain himself.

On this occasion, it was Lana's turn to be disappointed. It was clear that Aike was not a very interesting partner to engage in conversation with.

With his status and his handsome looks, Aike was very popular among women, and he was quite proud of himself for that. However, ever since he met Lana, he had constantly been on the back foot and was scrambling to just barely stay afloat.

It was clear that Lana was not a woman that he could woo like he did with the others.

Even the burly skeleton was starting to feel sorry for Aike, and it leaned down beside Lana's ear as it whispered, "You've turned the poor guy into a stuttering mess! No wonder you prefer smooth-talkers like Erwin."

Lana gave a cold harrumph in response as she glared at the burly skeleton.

Aike was under the impression that Lana's harrumph was an expression of displeasure against him, and that made him even more confused.

Flirting in the form of feigned displeasure only worked between two people on the same wavelength. Otherwise, it just looked like two people fighting with one another.

"What's next? You weren't able to impress me with your identity, so you're all out of tricks now?" Lana asked with a faint smile.

"Ms. Lana..." Aike paused momentarily here to muster up some courage, then continued, "Let me tell you the truth. Ever since I first laid eyes on you, my mind has gone completely blank, and I've been at a complete loss for what to do and say. I'm not ashamed to admit that even now, my heart is thumping violently in my chest."

Lana faltered slightly at the sight of his earnest expression and the deep blush on his face, then involuntarily burst into laughter.

Aike felt as if a huge load had been removed from his shoulders upon seeing this.

The traveling poet accompanying them didn't want to be blamed any further by his master, so he had refrained from interrupting their conversation this entire time, and he was also quite relieved to see Lana finally displaying some positive emotion toward Aike.

Encouraged by Lana's reaction, Aike suddenly developed a spring in his step as he led the way forward in a joyful manner. "Ms. Lana, this is the restaurant that I would like to recommend to you. Their venison is quite delicious."

"Is that right? I can't wait to taste it. I'm absolutely starving right now," Lana said.

Meanwhile, poor Perry was hobbling along as quickly as he could on one leg, desperately trying to keep up. It really wanted to tell everyone to slow down and wait for it, but didn't dare to do so for fear of incurring the wrath of its master.
