I left the place pa.s.sing from the corner of the dining area to a joint establishment of the guild where I would be having a training from Dominic.
“I may call this a training but I'll be only teaching you the basic skills of a Spirit Magician, therefore, you can be at ease while listening—although my teachings are limited, so at the very end it will be up to you on how you use them in your actual work.”
Dominic says amicably. He seemed to be the kind of man who takes his work seriously, I thought as I return his words.
“I understand, Dominic-san. I'd like to know more about my job cla.s.s so I'll be relying on you.”
Domic smiled happily.
“You're really a nice person to say that to a Rank E like me, Otis-san. Well, first of all, let me talk about being magician, as our job cla.s.s' name suggests, it is about getting in touch with spirits and together we execute a magic skill. There are various ways of getting in contact with spirits—you basically have to earnestly call out to the spirits in the nature or create a contract between you and a Spirit for them to continuously a.s.sist you.”
While saying so, Dominic opened a pouch around his waist where a blue sphere emerged from. The sphere began drifting away from his arms and drew closer to his face.
“Is that… a spirit?”
“Yes, that's right. It's a lesser light spirit.”
Lesser spirits usually bear no human form. Oftentimes, they take on the forms of sphere or cube because taking on a complicated shape like a human would need a certain amount of magic power. Well, despite calling them lesser spirit, they still posses some magic power that can help humans. If a magician gets in contact with a lesser spirit, he will still receive some magic power just like Dominic.
“As for me, the Company usually gives me quests like scouting and navigating. I would make this sphere of light fly in the sky in order to make sure there's no magic beast or to see if the road we're treading is the right way to the destination—and its generally known that Spirit Magicians is the perfect job cla.s.s for support when working on a quest for the Company.”
While explaining, Dominic gave some examples of the quests with the light spirit drifted around his face.
—I get it now, though I haven't read about this in the letters.
As I thought, it's quite helpful to learn from a veteran who personally experienced it. There's no loss in learning things, you wouldn't know when your stock knowledge will become useful in the future.
“Otis-san only belongs in the Global Guild and doesn't belong to Company, so you won't be receiving much work. If you ever decided to join the Company, you should be expecting that most of your work is to support.”
“ThThank you for telling me beforehand so I can prepare myself.”
“I guess it was worth telling you that. Now then, I shall teach you how to communicate with spirits although most of our skills were technical skills. If possible, you could use this if you start off as a member of Company but this should be also useful when going on adventure.”
After telling me this, Domic pointed his hand in the ceiling and said——
【Magic Sphere of Purification】
“So this is how you get in contact with spirits?”
“That's right, this is one way of doing it and that's by having a trade with spirits. If you give the spirit some magical meal 「Magic Sphere of Purification」then it will a.s.sist you in exchange. In case you haven't made any contact with a spirit before then it means you need more magic power to some extent… you may also use this to attract spirits or do your best until you get to have a contract with a spirit.”
So it's a trade of meals? Certainly, spirits will help in exchange for meals. This is basically a ritual and I think they might try to change their preferences soon, then Dominic said—
“Do you want to learn the magic skill I did earlier, Otis-san?”
“Yes, was it 「Magic Sphere of Purification」?”
I also tried how Dominic made it, a white sphere of light emerged from my palm twice the size of what Dominic made. It was neither hot nor cold and it simply vanished in the air when I closed my palm.
“Oh, as expected of a Rank C, you certainly remembered the magic skill at a single glance.”
“No, I think it's because it's not a really advanced magic skill and you have explained it in a way that's easy to understand. Bur Dominic-san, your contracted spirit——”
I said as I pointed at the lesser spirit, Dominic-san's spirit of light.
“My, thank you for telling me about that. There, there—you too, I'm grateful for your a.s.sistance in my training today.”
Dominic heartily laughs while patting the lesser spirit and then, the spirit trembled in his hold—
The spirit of light replied.
“You really have a great deal of trust in this spirit.”
“Well, I've been with this spirit for a long time.”
“I understand that but why is Dominic-san not talking to your spirit? This spirit is talking to Dominic-san.”
“Huh?”
Dominic looked at me and stopped moving after hearing my words.
“No way. Don't tell me you can understand the language of the spirits, Otis-san?”
“Eh? We-Well, I can certainly understand them.”
“Err, you see I always hear a high pitch sound coming from this spirit whenever I pat it—what is it saying?”
Dominic-san once again pats his contracted spirit and it gave a high pitched sound, but for me I clearly heard it's voice.
“Yes? Err—『I am grateful that you always pat me carefully so as to not tire me out. But I've oftentimes told you that it's not a problem if you don't create more magic spheres, don't you understand me? 』is what it said.”
“I-Is that so—”
As we speak, the spirit of light hopped around.
“The way it moves… is it moving like this because it's happy? Is what you said true?”
“I just translated what it said. I'm not telling a lie.”
Even a lesser spirit can understand a certain level of human language if it is contracted to a human since spirits simply don't have the magic power to make as many vocal organs as people do, so they can't speak well but it that case, humans only have to make an effort to listen to them.
“A conversation through mutual understanding—the language of spirits is too difficult for humans to understand and only high ranking Spirit Magicians can communicate efficiently with spirits—Otis-san is really amazing!”
Dominic says this with his eyes wide open.
“I thought that this was a technical skill?”
“Naturally, of course! Even though we've been together for a long time, I can barely understand it's words. I can only sense it's feelings basing on it's actions—for Otis-san to be able to do all of this… I can only hear high pitched sounds.”
“Eh, was that how do you hear it? It's been talking since earlier.”
“I see, it seems Otis-san can really communicate with the spirits. I heard that some people have the natural ability to speak the language of spirits—to be able to meet one personally…”
To be honest, it wasn't that I have it naturally but it's because I kept on conversing with Elder Spirit that I got to learn the language of the spirits——I guess in another way, I got to learn the language of spirits thanks to Elder Spirit. In addition, this is also because of my job cla.s.s as a Prophet which have the basic skill of hearing voices of other beings aside from humans, like the voices of the spirits in the nature. There's no need to correct the misunderstandings until now since it won't make any difference with how I learned the language of spirits. If I am asked, I'll just answer as it is—is what I thought.
“Ah, I'm ashamed. I was so surprised that we've lost track of our training. Ah, I should thank you—I should be the one teaching you but I instead was being taught. Ah, what an amazing newcomer we have!”
Dominic trembled in his feet—not by anger of fear but his eyes speaks differently as they looked at me with sparkling eyes and——
“As I thought, we don't need to continue this! The training is done, Otis-san. I feel like you're going to be a better Spiritual Magician after hearing about your skill to communicate with spirits.”
He said something like that, excitedly.
“Looks like Otis-san will be able to get used with his job cla.s.s Spirit Magician and I bet you'll beat me, this 10 years veteran Spirit Magician!”
It seems that I received good reputation just because I could converse with the spirits. I think that this all thanks to Elder Spirit.
“I'm sorry, I haven't taught you that much, Otis-san.”
Dominic says with an apologetic smile but I don't think so.
“No, I'm very grateful for the information about the meal trade with the spirit, the general jobs of a Spirit Magician, and so on, Dominic-san.”
Hearing my words, Dominic smiled as he scratches his cheeks.
“Haha—Otis-san is a really nice person. But then, that's good and I hope you will do your best in the same job cla.s.s.”
“Yes, I look forward in working with you.”
Thus, I was able to received the farewell gift from Global Guild and gained some experience with an acquaintance on the same job cla.s.s.
