Saving one's life is greater than undying devotion to Buddha. As the inborn go-between of good and evil, how could Ning Tao not go check on someone who was trying to jump off a building?
Ning Tao left the courtyard house and saw people running toward a condominium. A middle-aged woman exclaimed as she ran, “Someone's jumping off the building! Someone's jumping off the building!”
Ning Tao furrowed his brows slightly. Middle-aged people would be easily frustrated by young people not giving up their seats on public transport. Vile words being exchanged was usually the least they would do, and sometimes, they could even escalate it to physical fights. He was confused by this auntie running like a marathon athlete despite her large, chubby size. Did she really have to get so excited about someone jumping off the building?
Qing Zhui had also run out of the courtyard and looked curiously at the crowd running over to that condominium. She was stunned momentarily before asking, “Brother Ning, what happened? Why are people running there?”
Ning Tao said, “Someone's jumping off the building. Let's go and see if we can be of any help. If we really can't, then you can do something about it. Saving a life is greater than devotion to Buddha. This is your chance to acc.u.mulate merit.”
“Okay.” Qing Zhui agreed then followed Ning Tao as he ran toward the condominium.
Before Master Ning and his destined concubine had gone far, Jiang Hao was catching up to them from behind. “Wait for me.”
She had already changed into her uniform, but Ning Tao was still missing that athletic bikini outfit.
A sea of people had congregated at the ground floor of that condominium. There were also fire trucks and firefighters. The scene was bustling.
Ning Tao lifted his head to take a look and he saw a girl in her teens sitting on the air-conditioning frame on the sixth floor. He could not help but s.h.i.+ver inside. What could possibly be the reason for a young girl like her to attempt suicide?
A fireman appeared at the window beside the air-conditioning frame. He was about to climb out of the window when the girl started losing control and shouted at him, “Don't come over here! Or else I'll jump!”
“Calm down, young lady. I won't go over. Be careful, don't fall.” The fireman advised the girl while he pulled his leg back into the house.
The girl started sobbing sadly. Tears kept falling.
Ning Tao had intended to get Qing Zhui to go save that girl but had decided against it after seeing the fireman. There had to be other firemen in the room, which was most probably cordoned off currently. Qing Zhui would definitely run into trouble there if she went up. He moved close to Qing Zhui's ear and whispered, “Let's observe the situation first. If the firemen save that girl, then you don't have to get involved. But if the firemen can't persuade her, then we'll think of a way.”
“Okay.” Qing Zhui nodded.
Ning Tao and Qing Zhui looked somewhat intimate as they were whispering to each other. Jiang Hao was just standing beside them, but she did not appear to be jealous. Qing Zhui had already been so magnanimous as to allow her and Ning Tao to spend time alone, so how could she be so petty?
Actually, the relations.h.i.+p of these three had been subtly changing, except that they had yet to be transparent about everything.
Someone in the crowd on the ground floor started exclaiming, “Why aren't you jumping? What's the point of us watching if you aren't jumping?”
“Yeah, we've been standing here for so long. When are you jumping!” someone echoed.
“Jump! Jump!”
“Are you jumping or not? I'm getting impatient!”
More people joined the commotion.
The firefighting instructor said anxiously, “Don't create a commotion, don't provoke her!”
“It's not illegal to talk right? It's not like it was me who made her climb up there. If she had the guts to get up so high then she should have the guts to jump down,” a middle-aged man said in a self-righteous manner.
“You…” The firefighting instructor was driven speechless.
Ning Tao raged inside. That girl must have been met with some insurmountable hards.h.i.+ps and became devastated. Yet these people were encouraging her to jump. Indeed, talking may not be illegal to them, but their actions were as good as murder!
Words could hurt deeper than knives sometimes.
“Jump! Jump!” That middle-aged man grew more enthusiastic and shouted even louder.
Some of the spectators were laughing, then more people started laughing. The atmosphere was noisy and lively, as if they were watching a clown performing for them, instead of a desperate teenage girl. They were customers and their desires should be fulfilled.
The sky was blue and clear. The sun of the autumn day shone brightly. Yet Ning Tao felt a sense of chill.
What had made people so apathetic?
What had driven humanity to become so scary?
Ning Tao walked toward that middle-aged man who had led the commotion with a frightening gaze.
Jiang Hao seemed to have realized what Ning Tao wanted to do and grabbed on to Ning Tao's arm. “What are you doing?”
Ning Tao said nothing as he shook Jiang Hao's hand off, and continued walking toward that middle-aged man. A Sacred Needle was already in his hand.
Jiang Hao saw the needle in his hand and stopped trying to prevent Ning Tao. She was worried that Ning Tao would lose control and beat those people up. Enforcing violence in such a situation would definitely get them into trouble. But after seeing that Ning Tao was holding on to a Sacred Needle, she stopped worrying.
Very quickly, Ning Tao had come to the side of that man, and pushed past him. And in that instant, the Sacred Needle in his hand was stabbed into that middle-aged man's spine with a waft of evil energy.
“What are you pus.h.i.+ng for? Don't you know what first come, first serve means?” That middle-aged man snarled while glaring at Ning Tao.
Ning Tao cowered his head slightly. “Sorry, sorry.”
“You think an apology is enough? Are you in a rush to get reincarnated?” That man continued to ridicule.
Ning Tao cowered his head once again. “Sorry, sorry.”
“Scram, don't block my view!” the man scolded.
Ning Tao did not respond and continue pus.h.i.+ng forward. With the Sacred Needle to Nasty Diseases, that middle-aged man's spinal cord would be damaged in less than two days. His whole body would first be paralyzed, then he would die. He had already given the worst punishment; he did not need to argue with a dying person anymore.
“Are you going to jump or not! I'm in a rush to pick my child up from school!” an auntie roared.
That woman was the one who was yelling about someone jumping off the building.
That girl could no longer take these provocations and stood up from the air-conditioning frame.
The fireman standing behind the window grabbed on to the girl's hand hurriedly. “Young lady, you're still young, don't take things to heart. Listen to me, come back now, don't jump.”
The girl sobbed as she said, “Uncle, don't try to persuade me anymore. I'm going to heaven.”
Ning Tao had a bad feeling in his guts.
The girl jumped from the frame.
“No—” The fireman reached out to grab the girl's hand but missed it.
Ning Tao, Qing Zhui, and Jiang Hao had started moving almost at the same time, and ran toward the spot the girl was falling. But there were too many people in the way and time was tight, so it was not enough at all. From the moment the girl had jumped, it was just within a brief two seconds that the girl had fallen to the ground.
“Thump!”
The whole world became quiet.
The girl convulsed briefly then stopped, forever. Her youthful face was planted on the cold, hard cement ground. Blood gushed from her mouth, nostrils, eyes, and ears, soaking her school uniform and the ground below her red.
Ning Tao stayed still and stopped running.
The girl's innate aura had vanished. She was dead.
He had wanted to save that girl but could only watch on as she died in front of him. A sense of powerlessness washed over him, followed by sorrow. A living, breathing young life had fallen right in front of him, yet there was nothing he could do. Just when he was on his way here, he was so sure that she could save that girl. The bloodied truth was a huge mockery to him.
“Wah…” The fireman standing by the window started wailing, his tears falling profusely. Men do not cry easily, yet a man like him had ended up crying so hard.
The crowd had grown livelier.
Some people were taking photos and posting them on their social media.
Some were sighing but with a sense of hypocrisy.
Those people who had started the commotion did not intend to let the matter rest and were still making snide remarks.
“Oh, she really jumped. She must have been stressed by her homework and couldn't take it anymore. What kind of family had raised such a useless child who could not take a bit of stress? It was probably better for her to be liberated anyway.” That auntie spoke to the person beside her with a grin. It was that woman who had urged the girl to jump because she was in a rush to go pick up her child.
Ning Tao looked at that auntie with a deathly cold glare. He wanted to go over, but the auntie was surrounded by women so it was inconvenient for him to push himself through. He activated his Hundred Steps Flying Needle Method, and with a shake of his hand, the Sacred Needle in his hand was hurled out.
That needle flew and pierced right into the auntie's thigh.
Ning Tao's clenched his fist and the thread of spiritual power tied to the Sacred Needle pulled the Sacred Needle right back into his hand like a withdrawn kite.
Success.
Ning Tao suddenly realized that he had failed in his practices of Hundred Steps Flying Needle Method before due to him not being in the state of evil. At this moment, he was in the state of evil with even stronger focus and resolution, so his control of the Sacred Needle had gotten even firmer.
However, that auntie was not too far away from him, just a dozen steps away. He wondered if it would still work if it were at a further distance. But if it worked within a dozen steps, would he be far from accomplis.h.i.+ng it within a hundred steps?
The auntie seemed to have sensed something. She turned back but did not see anything, so she did not pay it much mind. She had likely dismissed it as a mosquito bite, and then turned back to chat about that girl's death.
Ning Tao pa.s.sed through the crowd and carried out the punishment of Sacred Needle to Nasty Diseases. Other than personally injecting the middle-aged man who had started the commotion, he had performed the Hundred Steps Flying Needle Method on the rest of the people within a short distance. This had also become a chance for him to practice his Hundred Steps Flying Needle Method.
“Tao, what are you doing?” Jiang Hao could not see Ning Tao using the needles, but was curious about him going to and fro among the crowd.
Qing Zhui said, “Punis.h.i.+ng evil and promoting goodness.”
Jiang Hao seemed to have understood something.
Qing Zhui asked, “If he needed your help to punish evil people in the future, but you would have to break the law, would you help him?”
Jiang Hao did not hesitate at all before nodding. “Yes.”
